The female hiker often has to find a secluded spot and has to wander quite a distance to find a peeing sanctuary. She would be on high alert in case a wandering hiker catches her literally with her pants down which would result in a highly awkward and embarrassing situation.
Squatting to pee in the tropics is also a very irritating experience as dozens of mosquitoes suddenly swarm towards the exposed buttocks for a delicious meal. This and many other reasons, may dissuade a female from the wonderful experience of going on a hiking and camping trip.
While shopping online, I found a device which can solve this toilet problem. This device comes in disposable and non-disposable forms and allows the female hiker to pee while standing. It is the perfect outdoor sanitary device that allows the female hiker decency and convenience.
The non-disposable form is called the Freshette and retails on mountaingear.com for US$19.95.
Disposable types can be found p-standingup.com at US$3.49 for a packet of 3. Called the P-mate, it is made from recycled waxed cardboard and is shaped like a shoe and funnels the urine away from your feet. A video demo on it can be found at this link
Other designs are available such as the Urinelle, SaniCone and the Lafemme which is made from biodegradable paper and can be flushed away together with in the toilet whereas the P-mate cannot.
